In the end I didn't get to post the Watchalong movie for February. So, in the last week and a half of the month, if you'd like to see You Can't Take it with You directed by Frank Capra, you can see it instantly through Netflix for free.

I'm also collected nominations for our March movie. The theme is Documentary. Please nominate up to 2 documentaries over at the Ravelry group or in the comments to this post. Movies that have been nominated already are Harlan County, USA; Sicko; Jesus Camp; The Heart of the Game; and Into the Arms of Strangers. If you'd like to second any of these choices they will make it into the final vote. Nominations will be collected until this Saturday 2/23.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-82199896473576094442008-01-08T11:02:00.000-08:002008-01-08T11:05:13.721-08:00January and an announcementDecember seriously kicked my behind, so January's movie is free choice. Whatever you want to watch, do so, and post here or on the Ravelry group with your thoughts and favorite knits from the movie(s).

Also, I'm finding it exceedingly difficult to keep up the blog and moderate the Ravelry group as well. It seems that most of the action happens over at Ravelry, so please check in with us there. I will keep this blog up to date with the watchalongs and knitalongs, but won't be posting much more commentary. If you'd like to contribute to the blog with your thoughts, please do! I just can't keep up with the commentary here and at the message board.

Let's have a fun, and fibery year with our knitting/crocheting, and movies!Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-88603502692228383992007-11-22T06:20:00.000-08:002007-11-22T06:26:32.999-08:00December KAL!

I know it's been a bit quiet here. Yes, it is a horror, but it's also a movie about what happens to people when the worst happens. What kind of person will you be if disaster strikes? Will you be like Jim, Frank, and Megan and not give up on you humanity and caring about people even if all you've known is lost? Will you be like Major Henry West and his soldiers and make up your own rules no matter what the human cost just to rebuild? How the characters deal with the horror and the choices facing them is what makes the movie so good.

Then I have to pay attention to the new treatment of zombies themselves. The infected in this movie are incredibly fast. This makes them terrifying. A scene that never fails to give me the shivers is the scene in the underground tunnel. This scene uses the notion of fleeing animals to great effect as a truly horrifying chase scene ensues.

So has anyone else had a chance to see 28 Days Later? I have plans to see 28 Weeks later when it comes out on DVD this month, and am looking forward to making comparisons.
But for now: What did you find most interesting about this movie? What was the most terrifying? What do you think the virus "Rage" is really? Are the soldiers and Major West totally evil, or can they be sympathized with somewhat?
Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-75583222627559419342007-10-01T18:28:00.000-07:002007-10-01T18:34:31.887-07:00October - 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks later

It's October and it's time for some scary movies! Great movie with lots of memorable lines. The thought did occur to me that John Cusack is perfect for this role. You could imagine some of the characters he played in the teen movies like Better off Dead and Say Anything growing up to be Martin Blank. I've never gone to a reunion. I have my 15th coming up this year. I've never felt the desire too, for some of the same reasons Martin doesn't (not the hired killer part, the I don't have anything in common anymore with these people part. I did fully enjoy this movie and watching his experience with coming home though.

Memorable quote: "They all have husbands and wives and children and houses and dogs, and, you know, they've all made themselves a part of something and they can talk about what they do. What am I gonna say? "I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. How've you been?"

Has anyone else seen this movie or Clueless or Heathers yet? Post your thoughts!

Also a reminder. If you wish to participate in the Yarn and a Movie Swap, please email kathie AT charter DOT net by September 25. If you leave a comment on this blog, she may not get it as she is a moderator over at the Ravelry group.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-51314288907070736282007-09-01T06:26:00.001-07:002007-09-01T06:28:06.092-07:00Our September through November movie selections! The votes left here and at the fiberflix craftalong blog have been tabulated. It was a very close race, but we do have winning movies. A quick review first: all are invited to watch and knit/spin/crochet along with these movie selections. I will put up discussion posts where we can then talk about the movies, and perhaps share what we were working on while watching them. Sounds like fun? I think so!

So what are the final movie selection winners?

September: Theme "Back to School"

Grosse Pointe Blank, Clueless, Heathers

October: Theme "Monster Movies"

28 Days Later, 28 weeks later (this movie comes out on DVD on October 9th! Here's the info. If you are interested please email Kathie at kathie AT charter DOT net to sign up.

"Yarn and a Movie" Swap
On suggestion from DiniKnits and with the blessing of CraftyLilly I bring you "Yarn and a Movie"!
Note At this time, the swap is open to those in the US and Canada due to region issues with dvd's. However we do have several people in this group who are in the UK and other locations outside the US & Canada, If there are enough of you who are interested we can match you up in the swap, just message me and let me know your interested.
Official Swap Rules and other Stuff...
1) Sign-ups Officially start Wednesday, August 22nd and will end Tuesday, Sept 25th @ Midnight PST. Swap partners will be distributed by Sept 30th. Packages can be sent anytime in October, but please be sure to get the package out in time for delivery by the 31st. To sign up please send me a message, or post your intent here. (We could also use an angel or two for just in cases)
2) This is a theme oriented swap, not everyone likes horror films so the categories are as follows horror/thriller/suspense. After you are paired up with your swap partner, you will exchange a short questionnaires (which I will post when we are ready to post partners) and a list of 5 movies in this genre that you would like to see.
3) What will be swapped?
a) A movie of course, preferably a new one.
b) Munchies to make movie night fun, this could be popcorn, candy, chips, anything that you think your swap partner might enjoy. You could also use this as an opportunity to include some type of local snack item that might not be readily available in your swap partners area.
c) Yarn!! Enough to make a small project like a hat, scarf or a pair of socks, you can also include any extra goodies you might want to pass on to your swap partner.
4) I'm thinking we are looking at about $40 per package plus shipping... give or take... I know there are some people who are swap shy because they have either at some point or another not received a package or got a puny package vs the spoils they sent. I do not want this swap to go down like that! If you cannot participate please do NOT sign up. There are times when once committed to something life happens, at that point please just message me and let me know, don't just disappear.
I really want this swap to go well, if you have any questions or issues please let me know. If this goes well we can probably set up do a movie swap several times a year, under different themes.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-76656370316576658192007-08-18T09:13:00.001-07:002007-08-18T09:23:05.784-07:00September through November Movie Nominations!I can't believe the summer is over. I just can't believe it! I know it's been quiet over here on the blog, but I hope you've enjoyed the Westerns this month. If you are on Ravelry and haven't joined our Fiberflix group, please do so! We are quite active over there. If you still have to receive your invite, when you do, please come join us!

It's that time to nominate films for the next three months so here are the themes:

September - "Back to School" Films. Let's nominate any movie that occurs at a school (any grade, high school, or college). There are so many choices that span so many genres! We can have a lot of fun with this one.

October - Monster Movies. Any movie that features a monster is appropriate for our nominations here. The monster can be a classic monster (the orignial Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula movies, zombie movies, etc.), or a human that has a monstrous character (Hannibal Lector movie, Cape Fear, Brotherhood of the Wolf, etc). These movies can be horrors or thrillers. In fact I'll probably have us choose one of both so that the horror adverse will have something to watch too.

November - Retrospective of a Director. Nominate your favorite film director, or one you'd like to explore further. In October we'll vote on which 2 or 3 directors films we will watch together.

Please make your nominations in the comments of this blog (one or two for each month). I will also post this on the Ravelry group to collect even more nominations. Please nominate in only one place, either here or on Ravelry.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-69235588905204294942007-08-03T05:59:00.000-07:002007-08-03T06:08:13.498-07:00Rustle up your six-shooters, and hop on your horseIt's time for a Western! Our August movie selections are Tombstone and/or the Magnificent Seven. If you decide to see the Magnificent Seven, it might be interesting to also see Kurosawa's The Seventh Samarai. Although The Seventh Samarai isn't technically a Western, The Magnificent Seven was based on it, so it would be interesting to do a comparison. I'm going to try to have some links up by the end of the weekend about our genre and movie selections.

Two things to look forward to:

1) I will be putting up nominations for out next movie selections in about a week or so. If you have an idea of a genre, or a topic (actor, director, theme) that you'd like to see sometime between September and November, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

2) If you get an invite to Ravelry, also come over and join our Fiberflix group. We've got quite a lively bunch there who love to talk about movies. I'm glad many of you that have received your invite have also joined in. I'll be posting a thread about our August selections in the next day or so.

3) Due to interest expressed with the Fiberflix group on Ravelry, I will be opening up a new Knitflix swap in September. It will have a monster/thriller theme and packages will aim to arrive around Halloween. I've finally got a few links up on our Guilty Pleasure choices, Dirty Dancing and 10 Things I Hate about You. I hope you all get a chance to see one or both this month. I will put up some discussion starters next week on our two films. To get us started though, I thought I'd share why I find Dirty Dancing to be such a guilty pleasure.

I was 13 years old when I saw this movie for the first time. I saw it on VHS at a friend's house during a sleep over. There was something just so fun, and a bit rebellious about watching this movie as a young teen with my friends. We ate popcorn and gummi bears, and drank soda and watched this movie three times at that sleepover. Monday at school had us saying, "Nobody puts Baby in the corner," to each other. Now here's the guilty pleasure part... I find that I enjoy the movie just as much as an adult. First, I still get caught up in the story, and it also brings back fond memories of me and my friends, eating junk food and watching it together.

So what about you? What makes these movies a guilty pleasure for you?Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-78708491964346088512007-06-28T19:28:00.000-07:002007-06-28T19:32:29.589-07:00Come vote for the best Knitflix swap package! The Knitflix Summer Blockbuster swap is complete, and I have 6 contestants for best pairing of fiber and film over at my blog. I'll post for Murder on the Orient Express as well.

Does anyone have any pattern ideas for Ingrid Bergman as well? Let us know what you're working on, even if it isn't related to the film. I'm interested in what you work on while watching!Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-30797043813547086742007-04-28T09:34:00.000-07:002007-04-28T09:37:39.317-07:00Summer Blockbuster Swap
I posted about this over at my blog, but I wanted to post about this swap here too. Here's the info!

I've been thinking of doing a second Knitflix swap for some time and all the movie talk in my last post gave me the prodding I needed to put it all together. With all the summer blockbuster's coming to theaters starting on Memorial Day weekend, I thought it would be fun to make this second swap, the Summer Blockbuster Edition.
Here's the skinny:

What? We will swap 1) a favorite movie watching food/candy/beverage treat, 2) Enough yarn for a small project or some roving to spin while watching a movie 3) A DVD that you think your swap partner will enjoy.

Swap minimum: Swap items should equal around $25. Used DVD's can be sent but make sure that they work. If you buy it from Netflix or Blockbuster, please check the DVD to make sure it works. If you send yarn from your stash, then the yarn should be unknit with ball bands.

When should swap packages be sent? Swap packages should arrive at your pal's house on or around June 15th, just in time for summer vacations.

Contest! Just like last time, I'm hosting a contest at the end of the swap. Once the packages are sent, participants may email me a picture and an explanation of how their fiber/yarn fits the theme of the DVD they sent their pal. I, along with some other crafting friends will narrow down the choices to the top 3-5 entries. I will post the finalists on the fiberflix blog and ask you all to vote. The entry that garners the most votes will win some sock yarn and a set of stitch markers from me.

As a final note, swap partners will not be a secret. Like last time, swappers will be paired up and will mail packages to each other. Also, this swap is open to international swappers, but swappers will be paired according to DVD encoding regions. Therefore, US swappers will swap with each other, European swappers will swap with each other, etc. If we end up with an odd number of swappers, we'll work out some alternatives.

Sound like fun? If you'd like to join, email me at craftylilly AT gmail DOT com by May 11. I'll have matches out by May 13.
Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-25806649498845094052007-04-27T19:15:00.000-07:002007-04-27T19:44:56.846-07:00Designer Woes and Designer HighsThe good news: I finished my Silk Garden vest - WooHoo! The not so good news: It is too big. It is a combination of the fact that I have lost weight and I didn't factor the "hang factor" into my plan. Although the vest is beautiful, the weight of the fabric causes it to pull. I think I have the problem remedied and am working feverishly on a new bodice and a smaller size. Pictures tomorrow - the vest is at the shop and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to write about our day at Yarntopia.

Today was a great crochet day at Yarntopia. I missed a visit from the H-Town Crocheters - sorry ladies! Amy took good care of them and I understand they had a great time. I did get there in time for a visit from Houston's own Crochet Dude, Drew Embrowsky. It isn't everyday a celebrity walks in the door of Yarntopia. Drew's a great guy and a talented designer, we had a good time visiting about yarn, crochet, and our mutual Melissa Leapman admiration society. Stay tuned for information on a workshop we have in the works with Drew.

I'm still working on the baby blanket, and should be able to finish it next weekend while we drive to my mom's. I frogged the Bella vest and don't intend to reknit it. I am going to use the yarn for a crochet project instead as Debbie Bliss Pure Cotton is a dream to work with and will be fabulous to wear. I am finding it hard to follow other's patterns - all I want to do is make my own designs. Balance, I must find the balance between what I must do and what I want to do. It's tough being a grown up.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34567221.post-47097541794198950842007-04-26T06:31:00.000-07:002007-04-26T08:19:23.392-07:00Ingrid Bergman MoviesWell, the votes are in, and our official Ingrid Bergman movies are:

Notorious and Murder on the Orient Express

Two very good choices, I think. I hope you all are having a chance to craft and watch Don Juan DeMarco. I have plans to watch it today. If you've already seen the movie and wish to talk about it, please post your thoughts and label your post "Don Juan DeMarco." If you are going to mention a spoiler, put the term "Spoiler" both in the label and the title of the post. The message board doesn't seem to be working for most of the group, so let's discuss here.

We do need to settle on a couple of Ingrid Bergman movies for next month. Now, since Ingrid Bergman is our focus next month, you could see any movie that features here. However, we will have one or two official movies of hers for next month.

Please take a look at my shortlist of her films. Please vote for two of these movies in the comments section of this post. Votes will be collected until Wednesday the 25th, and the official movies will be announced on Thursday, the 26th.

Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Anastasia (1956)
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)
Joan of Arc (1948)
The Bells of Saint Mary's (1945)
Casablanca (1942)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943)
Notorious (1946)Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18226954231516266581noreply@blogger.com11
